2016 was a great reading year for me. This was my first full year out of school (so you know, I actually kind of have a life), AND I got a kindle (serious game changer). Most of what I read I also really enjoyed, so I thought I would share my favourite books that I read in 2016.
Author: Ann Patchett
Intriguing story and very well written. I enjoyed reading it plus it made me feel smart (so rare!). And I think that every book lover can relate to Franny, who never wanted to be a writer, only a reader.
This is Happy
Author: Camilla Gibb
A bittersweet memoir about the life of Canadian author, Camilla Gibb. I think that this book is so important for a generation so obsessed with “finding happiness”. Happiness probably doesn’t look like we think it should, and we should perhaps stop focusing externally, and instead look internally.
What Alice Forgot
Author: Liane Moriarty
I don’t know what it was about this book, but I adored it. It was sweet, suspensful, and funny (come on, how often do you get all those things in one book?). A total beach read, I would recommend it to anyone who needs a bit of an escape.
Author: Emma Donoghue
This book dealt with a very serious, disturbing subject from the innocent eyes of a child. The effect of this was incredible. There are so many things we encounter on a daily basis that we would not think twice about, and Room really made me appreciate all those little things. It was also fascinating to experience an unconventional life through the perspective of a child who has never known anything else.
Author: Daphne Du Maurier
My favourite book that I read this year, by far. Rebecca is a classic that somehow reads like a modern day thriller. I could not put this book down. On top of that, the prose was so beautiful. The picture the author paints is so vivid. A must read.
